What to expect:

Each fall, AwakeningSoul hosts a four-day retreat, away from busy life, offering a time of sanctuary, sustenance, and inspiration. Within the Christian household, AwakeningSoul welcomes and celebrates all people wherever they are on their journey.

AwakeningSoul is more than a series of lectures. It is an invitation to participate as together we weave art, music, worship, nature, community meals, intentional conversation, and silent reflection into a “whole” experience. No single element makes the event.

This year’s gathering is a call to a participate in a Sacred Revolution - daring to understand and live the stories of our heritage in a new way, revitalizing our relationship with God and our world while challenging us to seek an alternative for our violence addicted culture. This is the work of a theological revolution.

Who you will hear:

Diana Butler Bass has the keen ability to cut through clutter and get to the heart of the matter. Diana is an author and renowned scholar focusing on shifts in religious thought and experience in America. She views the decline of interest in institutional religion as signaling a major transformation in how people are understanding and experiencing God. She believes the distant God of conventional religion is giving way to a more intimate sense of the sacred, moving from a vertical understanding of God to a God found in human community and nature. This shift is at the heart of the revolution that surrounds us. Diana invites us to join this sacred revolution, to reimagine our faith, and to change the world.

John Dominic Crossan is a brilliant, wise old soul. Regarded as the leading historical Jesus scholar in the world, Dominic is the teacher everyone wishes they’d had. A feisty mischief maker with a sparkle in his eye, he brings the stories of Jesus’ world, his life and death, into the 21st century. He says that when we tell the stories of the Roman Empire we are really talking about now. Pushing against institutional boundaries, Dominic boldly guides us to grasp the reality that Jesus was a non-violent revolutionary and compellingly calls us to follow Jesus’ way of resisting the empire.

Why would you want to come?

Friends of AwakeningSoul will tell you this is why they come -

I have attended 5 AwakeningSoul gatherings. Each year, I leave the event feeling loved, accepted, challenged, inspired, respected, nourished, nurtured, and spiritually enlightened. The Lutheridge Conference Center is the perfect environment to feel and connect with the scared presence of the Divine. God’s glorious creations are magnified through the NC mountains and wildlife. The AS itinerary provides the perfect schedule for individual and community interaction. The speakers complement one another with both the material they present and their presentations styles. The AwakeningSoul Ensemble feeds my soul with their amazing music and their gift of drawing us all into a sacred space. Can’t not mention the wonderfully, welcoming staff and the delicious food!!!

I always return home with a reflective spirit and a variety of concrete examples of how I can challenge myself to continue my spiritual journey. The AS activities, lectures, and open discussion help me to embrace my individuality, my creativity, and my authentic self. ~ Jane P., North Carolina

There is a rhythm at AwakeningSoul like no other. The warmth of the gathered community, the soulfulness of the incredible music, the space for silence and the natural and artistic beauty that encircles all create a container of loving transformation. ~ Brian P., Minnesota

I think we are feeling an increasing urge to come together and create and nurture paths to peace and greater understanding. AwakeningSoul helps to fulfill this urge and motivates me to act more, think bigger, and spread more joy in my daily life. AwakeningSoul is like a huge pot that is filled with thought provoking perspectives, sacred space, heartfelt seeking, a renewed sense of presence, music, dancing, and a whole lotta love!!

AwakeningSoul is a time and a place that I know I can come to year after year and dig deep into crucial and enlightening topics with a caring community that for me, personally, is just not a possibility in my day to day life. ~ Lindsey B., Germany

AwakeningSoul feeds me and makes me hungry at the same time; it both calms and troubles the waters of my soul. I have experienced the presence of God at AwakeningSoul in such a way as to be reminded that I am deeply loved by my creator, and reminded that God is calling me to join him in the work of healing this world. ~ Michael P., Minnesota

Awakening Soul is an oasis for the soul --- a place for centering and spiritual growth. If one chooses to interface with others, there's ample opportunity for thought-provoking discussion, but if you arrive seeking stretches of solitude, you will find that as well. I came away from my time there energized by challenging ideas, enriched by beautiful music, and filled with a renewed sense of spiritual possibilities. ~ Pat.H., Tennessee

My wife and I have attended every Awakening Soul from its beginning and all events have been filled with a wonderful balance of wisdom, spiritual growth, music, laughter, joy, and community. What a great combination: meaningful and joyful! One of my greatest joys is to worship in holy expectancy and the Awakening Soul experience delivers every time. The event is so well planned and managed we can just relax and enjoy the offerings of each day. We will certainly continue to come and encourage all we know to join us. ~ Mark R., North Carolina

I came to Awakening Soul weary and spent and left inspired, empowered, and deeply enriched. Through the use of beautiful art, stirring music, gorgeous liturgy, loving and deep thinkers, yummy food, and nature’s stunning setting I reconnected with God and made the most wonderful friends! In a few short days the conference fostered a safe, compassionate and accepting community that found its commonality in the spirit of God’s love. I laughed, cried, prayed and loved. ~ Dawn D., Canada
